A Batman Prequel Focusing On Alfred The Butler Has Been Confirmed

It’s that cutthroat time of the year when we find out whether the TV companies have seen enough from their shows to keep them on for another few seasons.

This can be a nervy time (especially if you’re in Brooklyn Nine Nine, or Designated Survivor) but it’s also the time when we find out about ideas for new shows that are coming along to take their place, so it’s not all bad.

Well, just days after it was announced that Gotham is going to back on our screens for one more final season, there has been word that we are going to also get a prequel Batman universe series called Pennyworth.

The series will focus on Bruce Wayne’s long-suffering butler, friend, and companion, Alfred Pennyworth and it’s going to look at his past (I think nowadays it’s called an origin, but he’s a butler for Christ’s sake, not a mutant) and how he came to look after Batman – sorry – ‘Master Wayne’.

Despite Bruce Heller being the executive producer, creator, and writer of Gotham, it is thought that the series will not be related to it in any way. Instead, there will be 10 original episodes telling a completely separate story.

And it promises to be an interesting story. Alfred Pennyworth was an SAS soldier who formed a shadowy company and went into business with Thomas Wayne, Batman’s dad, in London during the swinging 60s.

Whilst his backstory has changed from time to time, all of the options seem pretty exciting. One has Alf as a field surgeon, another has him as a spy, the possibilities for the series are pretty much endless.

It will be put out by Epix in the USA, and their president Michael Wright said: “As genuine fans of these classic DC characters, as well as the incredibly talented Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon, we couldn’t be more excited to make Epix the home of this series.

“We can’t wait to work with Bruno and Danny – along with Peter Roth, Susan Rovner, Brett Paul and the team at Warner Horizon – on this fantastic origin story.”

Heller and his partner Danny Cannon also put out a statement, saying that they are equally as stoked to be working on the project with Epix.

It read: “Michael and his colleagues have created the perfect venue for original storytelling, and all of us working on Pennyworth are thrilled to be on the Epix slate.”

Production for the show is likely to start later this year.
